The “a-SMART-Fit” Project

The focus of this project is on SMART materials that can withstand high temperatures and defend themselves in harsh situations, like fusion plasma interactions or exposure to the atmosphere in the case of an accident. Tungsten, chromium, and yttrium are used in SMART materials to provide durability and functionality.

As a PhD candidate, you will:

  • Optimize FAST (Field-Assisted Sintering Technology): Develop SMART and EUROFER components with minimal thermal gradients.
  • Explore Joining Mechanisms: Investigate the interface between SMART and EUROFER steel.
  • Study Material Microstructures: Utilize advanced techniques like SEM, EDX, and EBSD.
  • Develop Cooling Channels: Innovate EUROFER structures for effective plasma operation cooling.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Educational Background: Master’s degree in Materials  Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience: Familiarity with powdered material synthesis and processing is advantageous and knowledge of refractory materials, fusion science, and plasma-wall interactions is desirable.
  • Skills: Independent initiative and teamwork capabilities and proficiency in English (spoken and written).

Preferred Skills

  • Microstructure characterization using SEM, EDX, and EBSD.
  • Expertise in mechanical alloying and FAST.
  • Familiarity with refractory materials and their applications.
