The International Summer Student Programme (ISSP) 2025, a fully financed research opportunity for undergraduate students studying science and engineering, has been announced by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB). The program, which runs from July 7 to August 29, 2025, gives participants a priceless opportunity to engage on innovative research projects in Berlin, Germany.

ISSP German Programme Objectives

The ISSP is intended to introduce students to cutting-edge research areas like:

  • Photon Science
  • Electrochemical Energy Storage
  • Accelerator Research
  • Photovoltaics and Solar Cells
  • Quantum and Functional Materials

In addition to working on specific research projects with HZB scientists, participants will take part in a comprehensive framework program that consists of:

  • Visits to state-of-the-art facilities, such as BESSY II synchrotron radiation source.
  • Excursions to Berlin’s leading research institutions.
  • Workshops on science communication and entrepreneurship.
  • A closing event featuring a scientific poster presentation.

Funding and Benefits

1# Internship Allowance:

    • €1,900 gross for participants from outside Berlin.
    • €1,000 gross for students from Berlin or Potsdam universities.

2# Travel Subsidy: Reimbursement of 75% of travel costs up to:

    • €200 for students from EU countries.
    • €800 for students from non-EU countries.

3# Networking Opportunities: Engage with renowned scientists and fellow students from around the world.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should meet the below requirements:

  1. Be an undergraduate (Bachelor’s or Master’s) student in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Structural Biology, Mathematics, Engineering, or related disciplines.
  2. Have completed at least two years of full-time university studies in their field.
  3. Be enrolled at a university during the programme duration (7 July to 29 August 2025).
  4. Possess a strong command of English (knowledge of German is advantageous).
  5. Submit a letter of reference from a faculty member or mentor.

In an effort to advance gender equality in science, HZB invites women to apply and accepts applications from students (including international student) of all backgrounds.

  2. Certificate of enrollment valid until at least August 2025.
  3. Academic transcripts and degree certificates (if applicable).

  5. Letter of reference.
  6. Declaration of Certificate of Enrollment (for Non-EU/EEA applicants requiring a German work permit).
